THE ADVENTURE OF YOUNG LOVE
My first girlfriend,
a Mexican migrant
loved the popular
tunes of the day.
Lucia sang to me:
Come on—a my house,
I’ll give you candy.
When her parents
were away, I rang
her doorbell and was
always greeted with
a burning kiss of fire.
I was 16 and she had
recently turned 17.
After discovering the
animal part of love,
I sang and danced
like Charlie Chaplin,
and looked up to see
if I was making the right
moves, and found her
applauding, and smiling
like a Cheshire cat.
